rhyme scheme

Def: A regular pattern of end rhyme that defines the shape of a poem and holds it together.
Ex:Bid me to weep, and I will weep(A)
While I have eyes to see;(B)
And having none, and yet I will keep(A)
A heart to weep for thee.(B)

Stanza

Def: Is a unit within a larger poem. In modern poetry, the term is often equivalent with strophe; in popular vocal music, a stanza is typically referred to as a "verse".
Ex:Our God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.
Beneath the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defense is sure.
Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

Sonnet

Def:is fundamentally a dialectical construct which allows the poet to examine the nature and ramifications of two usually contrastive ideas, emotions, states of mind, beliefs, actions, events, images, etc., by juxtaposing the two against each other, and possibly resolving or just revealing the tensions created and operative between the two. A 14 line poem.

Ex:Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no! it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me prov'd,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov'd.

Allusion

Def: A reference to, or representation of, a place, event, literary work, myth, or work of art, either directly or by implication.
Ex: I am no Prince Hamlet.

Mood

Def: A prevailing emotional tone or general attitude.
Ex: "Life is full of misery, loneliness, and suffering--and it's all over much too soon."

Personification

Def:Giving an animal or object human qualities.

Ex: The tree billowed in the wind.
